Course 404 errors

What to check when a learner sees a 404 error while opening one of your courses, and what to send us if it keeps happening.

Why is a learner getting a 404 error when they open my course?

A 404 error means the page the learner tried to open couldn't be found. Start by checking the link they used, that the course is published, and that its access settings let them in, then ask them to try again. If the error keeps happening, send us the details below and we'll look into it.

What should I check first?

Work through these in order. Each one takes a minute or two.

  1. Copy a fresh link. Open the Share dialog on the course and copy the link again. Links pasted into emails, documents or chat tools sometimes get cut short or pick up extra characters, so compare the learner's link with the fresh one.
  2. Check the course is published. Publishing makes your course live for learners. If you've only saved your changes, publish from the builder.
  3. Check the access settings. In the Share dialog, under Who can access this course?, make sure the course isn't set to No one (course disabled). If it's set to Only people invited or Only people with an approved domain, check the learner is on the list or is using an email address from an approved domain. Access changes take effect straight away, even for people who already have the link.
  4. Open the link yourself. Paste the link into a private or incognito browser window. This shows you what a learner sees, without your Coassemble sign-in.

What can the learner try?

If the link and settings look right, ask the learner to:

  1. Refresh the page, or close it and open the link again.
  2. Try a different browser, or a private or incognito window.
  3. Wait a few minutes and try again.

If they opened the course from Slack and the link has expired, they can generate a new one straight away.

What should I send support if it keeps happening?

If the error keeps coming back, get in touch through Get help, then Ask us in the app. Include as much of this as you can, so we can find the problem quickly:

  • The course name and the link the learner used
  • How they opened it: a share link, an email invitation, Slack, SCORM in your LMS, or a course embedded in your own product
  • A screenshot of what they see, including the full address in the browser bar
  • When it happened, with the time zone
  • Their browser and device
  • Whether it affects one learner or several

Frequently asked questions

You may be seeing it while signed in to Coassemble, where the learner isn't. Open the link in a private or incognito window to see it as they do, and check the access settings match how you want them to get in.
