How to make learners watch a video or listen to narration in full before they move on, and why the Continue button stays greyed out.

How do I make learners watch a video in full before they move on?

Select the video block, open the Enforce completion menu in the block toolbar (the tick and padlock icon), and switch it on. Learners then have to watch the entire video before they can continue. It works for videos you upload and for videos linked from YouTube or Vimeo.

How do I turn on enforce completion for a video?

Open the screen and select the video block.
In the toolbar above the block, select the tick and padlock icon.
Switch on Enforce completion.

Turn it on for each video you want learners to finish. Other videos in the course stay optional.

Can I make learners listen to audio in full?

Yes, for narration. Open the Narration settings for the course and turn on Require learners to listen in full. Learners can't move on from a screen until its narration finishes.

An audio file you upload to an Audio block can't be enforced. If learners must hear it all, use narration for that content instead.

Why is the Continue button greyed out for my learners?

In a new builder course, learners move on with one Continue button, and it stays disabled until the screen is complete. A screen isn't complete until the learner has:

Watched any video with enforce completion switched on, to the end
Listened to the narration in full, if the course requires it
Answered every question on the screen
Ticked off every checklist item
Worked through interactive blocks, such as opening each pin on a Hotspot block

There's no setting for it in the new builder, because every new builder course is sequential. Learners go through the screens in order and can't move past a screen until it's complete. Once they've made it through the course, they can jump back to any section from the course outline, which is handy when they return to look something up. Free navigation is only available in the Classic builder.

How does this work in the Classic builder?

In a Classic course, open the Video screen, select Enforce completion at the top of the screen and switch it on. A lock replaces the navigation arrow until the learner has watched the whole video. Classic courses also let you choose sequential or free navigation for the whole course.

Frequently asked questions

Can learners skip ahead in a video with enforce completion on?

Skipping ahead won't count the video as watched. The learner needs to play it through to the end before they can continue.

Is a learner's place in the video saved if they leave?

For videos you upload, yes. If a learner closes the course and comes back, the video picks up where they stopped. For YouTube and Vimeo videos, their place isn't saved, so they start the video again. For long videos learners must finish, uploading the file works best.

Why can't I see the Enforce completion option?

The option sits on the video block. If you've brought a video in through an Embed block, add it with a video block instead, either by uploading the file or pasting the YouTube or Vimeo link.
