Which screen to use

Pick a screen type based on what you're trying to do on that screen: present information, show media, explain a process, make something interactive, or check understanding. This page maps common goals to the screen that fits best.

Coassemble gives you 11 screen types, and the right one depends on your goal for the screen, not just the content you have. Use the guidance below to choose, then build the screen and refine it in the editor.

I want to present information

  • A paragraph with a supporting image: use a Text and image screen.
  • A topic introduced across a few steps: use a Slideshow screen to combine text and images over several slides.
  • A lot of detail in a small space: use an Accordion screen so learners expand only the sections they need. Good for acronyms, definitions, or reference detail.

I want to show media or a document

  • A video: use a Video screen. Paste a YouTube or Vimeo link, or upload a file on paid plans.
  • A PDF or file to read or download: use a Document screen to show it inline.
  • External content like a survey, form, podcast, map, or booking tool: use an Embed screen.

I want to explain a process or sequence

  • Steps, a procedure, or a timeline: use a Process screen to lay them out in order.
  • Points or actions learners tick off: use a Checklist screen.

I want learners to interact

  • Cards that flip to reveal more: use a Flashcards screen, great for self-testing recall.
  • A labelled image or infographic to click and explore: use a Hotspot screen.

I want to check understanding

Use a Quiz screen. It auto-grades and supports seven question types: multiple choice, multiple response, true/false, short answer, fill in the blank, matching, and sequence. Use it as a knowledge check at the end of a course, or throughout to reinforce learning.

Frequently asked questions

What if no single screen fits what I need?

Combine screens. Most courses mix several types, for example a Text and image screen to introduce a concept, a Process screen to show how it works, and a Quiz screen to check it landed.

How many screens should a course have?

Around 20 or fewer works best. For longer topics, split the content into several shorter courses grouped into a collection.

Can I mix different screen types in one course?

Yes. You can add, remove, and reorder screens of any type at any time in the editor.
